AFRICAN STORIES

The image of Africa painted by the west has been more negative than positive as has been the trend in most media organizations talking about this rich continent.

In an effort to reverse this unfortunate scenario, the Deutsche Welle Akademie brought together African journalists from across the southern African region to tell the African story as it should be.

The participating countries included Namibia, Malawi, Zambia and the hosts South Africa.

As a Zambian representative for our participating station, MUVI TV, we had a challenging but worthwhile task of highlighting a positive aspect about Africa from the diverse opportunities people in Cape Town have identified.

The stories were mainly centered on individuals making a difference in their various traits despite the challenges they are encountering.

Team Zambia represented by Alister Sibbuku, Matthew Nthala and Pennipher Sikainda did a piece on a visually impaired Cape Town resident who is using his disability to change public perception especially among the young people in schools.

Its expected that more media institutions take up the role of painting a more positive picture about the continent to highlight the achievements by individuals and certain government strides leading to better welfare of the people.

SUDAN: 4 ZAMBIANS SHOT AND WOUNDED

Four United Nations peacekeepers in Sudan from the Zambia Army have been wounded after their patrol was attacked.
This was in the oil rich region of Abyei region along the north-south border.
One of the four peacekeepers is reportedly in critical condition.
Reports reaching Zambia indicate that Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesperson for the UN Mission in Sudan confirmed that unidentified assailants shot and wounded four United Nations peacekeepers while they were on patrol in the disputed Abyei area of Sudan on Tuesday.
The mission has disclosed that the four blue helmets, all from Zambia, were shot around 4:40 p.m. as they returned from a regular patrol to the north of the town of Abyei.
Abyei is disputed by the Dinka Ngok, a southern ethnic group who are the permanent residents of the region, and the Misseriya, northern nomads who spend part of every year there seeking pastures for their cattle.
On Sunday the north and south agreed to remove any unauthorized troops from Abyei, claimed by both sides, which was seen as a positive development. However, Since January there have been a series of bloody clashes between the groups.
They have accused each other of using security forces in the fighting, and of a build-up of troops near Abyei.
Last month, President Omar al-Bashir threatened not to recognise the new state if it tried to claim Abyei.
The Abyei region was meant to have its own referendum on whether to join the north or the south in January, but agreement could not be reached on whether the Misseriya could vote.

ZAMBIA REBRANDS IN MAY 2011

The Zambia Tourism Board is in May 2011 unveiling the country’s new tourism brand name.

The country will disassociate from the tagline “Zambia the Real Africa.”
According to the tourism board about 3,981 emails from 2,017 different people produced 4,445 slogans and 956 different images from 45 countries during a competition to rebrand Zambia.
Zambia is known to be a fascinating country with unbeatable safaris and adventure, great culture and friendly people and of course the iconic Victoria Falls!
Although it is still relatively undiscovered, with much potential, the government is looking to build on the sectors strengths and earn more revenue.
Owing to increased tourism, this would mean more jobs in rural areas, more funds for conservation and a healthier economy in a developing country.
Zambia Tourism Board Director of Marketing, Evans Muhanga has explained that the new brand will see a revived face of Zambia’s tourism sector and ultimately tourist arrivals.
The local tourism supporting body had recently tabled for approval before cabinet, the rebranded slogan and logo that will sell Zambia as tourist destination.
Zambia Tourism Board Chairman Timothy Mushibwe  has equally noted that once the logo and slogan are approval by cabinet, the board will launch the rebranded image in Durban South Africa where the Zambia is hosting a road show.
He said later this will be launched in Zambia at one of the major international conferences that country is scheduled to host this year.
Zambia was previous sold as the real Africa but the slogan created an impression in western tourists that the country is dangerously plagued by diseases.
Its anticipated that this new brand wil reverse the negative perceptions about this country known for its large scale production and not its beauty and other natural wonders that include magnificent water bodies.

PREPARATIONS HEIGHTEN FOR 10th AGOA FORUM

The Zambian civil society has prodded government to be inclusive as the June 2011 10th African Growth Opportunity Act-AGOA-Forum draws near.

Zambia, the current chair of AGOA is hosting the 10th forum this June from the 6th to 8th and preparatory meetings by the 4th with the theme now announced as
Enhanced trade through increased competitiveness, value addition and deeper regional integration.

About 2,000 delegates are expected to take part in the forum were government, civil society and the African women enterprises program will be in attendance.
The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) were signed into law on May 18, 2000 as Title 1 of The Trade and Development Act of 2000.

The Act offers tangible incentives for African countries to continue their efforts to open their economies and build free markets.

Countries like Zambia have however not benefited from the facility as evidenced in the declining exports recorded in the period 2006 to 2010.
The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry highlights that in 2006 exports in to the US market were at 361,000 US Dollars then rose to 10.9 million US Dollars in 2008 and later nosedived to 121,000 US Dollars in 2009 before regaining momentum in 2010 at a paltry 1.4 million US Dollars.
As part of those preparing for the hosting, the Consumer Unit and Trust Society-CUTS International Zambia office; which is hosting the AGOA Secretariat, has engaged in an aggressive media campaign ahead of the much anticipated Africa Growth AGOA forum.
CUTS International Zambia Executive Board Chairperson, Love Mtesa therefore says through the media campaign, his organization will ensure that all economic sectors benefit from participating in the forum.
The forum will be an opportunity for Zambia to redeem itself in actively benefiting from the American market.
Mr. Mtesa has said.
On the other hand, government has highlighted the media’s cardinal role in economic development.
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary, Sam Phiri has emphasized the media's role in exposing available business opportunities to potential investors.
The media must raise public awareness on the AGOA forum as well as its benefits for the local business community. I am also challenging you as the local media to stimulate international private sector interest in the Zambian economy
Dr. Phiri stated.

About 20 journalists and civic representatives converged in Lusaka for a preparatory meeting aimed at harmonizing information on AGOA so that journalists are equipped with in-depth knowledge on intricate matters about the forum.
