ZAMBIA LOCAL AUTHORITIES RECEIVE Q1 2011 FUNDING

Close to 2 billion kwacha has been disbursed to local authorities for the construction and rehabilitation of civic centers.
Some of the institutions have not had operating structures thereby hampering their ability to operate efficiently.
According to the disbursement scheduled provided, Mongu and Mufulira Municipal Councils have been provided with 500 million kwacha each, Kawambwa and Chongwe District Councils 365 million kwacha each while Katete District Council has been given 250 million kwacha.
The release of the funds has since elated the Zambia United Local Authority Workers Union -ZULAWU.-
ZULAWU President Mishek Nyambose has explained in an interview that the release of the funds will enable councils that have had infrastructural changes operate from better facilities.
And Mr. Nyambose has disclosed that more grants have been provided to councils country wide averaging 100 million kwacha each to aid inoperations.
Mr Nyambose has disclosed that the Mansa Municipal council which has had up to 24 month salary arrears is partly relieved of its challenges with 780 million kwacha provided.
He also disclosed that the Chipata, Kafue, and Kabwe Councils have on the other hand been provided with 400 million kwacha each which will aid in their operational challenges.
In another development, ZULAWU has cautioned workers in councils against setting preferences for people to work with.
The ZULAWU President notes that the Local Government Service Commission which commenced its work recently is expected to make recommendations for different staff placements that may not be to the expectation of certain people.
He explains that the pending staff movements however call for acceptance.
Meanwhile, the Union has urged newly appointed Local government permanent Secretary Christah kalulu to continue with the hardworking attitude she had while serving as Lusaka District Commissioner.
